Discover Pisa with City Sightseeing

Two routes – one ticket! The City Sightseeing Bus Tour of Pisa will help you discover the city, situated just a few kilometers away from the Tyrrhenian Sea and San Rossore Natural Park. The tour starts from the bell tower and takes you through the city and its squares, outer boroughs, to its museums and along the Lungarni (riverside streets).

Visit the beautiful Piazza del Duomo (near Piazza Arcivescovado) which is home to the famous Leaning Tower. The Tower of Pisa, which was begun in 1173, stands 180 feet high. It leans more than 14 feet out of line, due to its faulty foundation on unstable soil. Take a 30 minute tour of the tower, climb the 300 steps and enjoy a fantastic view from the top. Visit the pristinely beautiful white buildings of the baptistery and the cathedral while you’re in the vicinity.

Hop off at the National Museum of Palazzo Reale (stop 3 on Red Line A) which houses the offices of the Artistic Heritage Commission as well as rare collections. Admire portraits of Pisan nobles, as well as tapestries and furnishings by 16th century Flemish and Florentine artists.

Hop off at the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina (stop 6 on Red Line A), a gem with towering, Gothic spires rising from the roof, some of which are adorned with statues of the Virgin Mary. Inside the building, a simple sanctuary awaits, with its ceiling decorated during its reconstruction in the 19th century. The sanctuary is home to The Madonna of the Rose and The Madonna del Latte, which are masterpieces of Gothic sculpture.

Visit San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno (stop 7 on Red Line A), one of the most remarkable Romanesque churches in Tuscany, with its beautiful façade, and the 11th century chapel at the rear, built by monks.

Visit the Cittadella Vecchia (Old Citadel – stop 11 on Red Line A), an ancient fortification built beside the city walls at the water’s edge.You'll recognize the unmistakable profile of the building, which is one of the city’s landmarks. The area surrounding it was once the hub of Pisa’s ship building activity.

Take the Bus Tour to Piazza XX Settembre where you will find the town hall, the Palazzo del Comune and the Logge dei Banchi which has been hosting the textile market since the 17th century (stop 6 on the Red Line A).

Across the river at Piazza Garibaldi (stop 6 on the Red Line A), wander through the old streets and browse through the shops. Visit the classically styled Museo di San Matteo, which houses prestigious paintings and sculptures. Located in the medieval monastery of Saint Matthew, the riverside edifice displays pieces by major Pisan artists as well as archaeological and ceramic works.

Hop off at Giardino Scotto (stop 5 on the Red Line A), a fortified area also known as Fortezza Nuova, built by the Florentines after the conquest of Pisa 1406. The area is now home to leafy gardens where you can relax and enjoy concerts and films.

Your visit won’t be complete without a visit to Knight’s Square (Piazza dei Cavalieri – stops 2 or 3 on the Red Line A), one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The square was the political centre in medieval Pisa. It is now the center of education, the main house of the Scuola Normale di Pisa and a higher learning institution part of the University. The city streets are animated by students who organize shows, cultural events, and generate a convivial party atmosphere in Pisa’s bars.

Line B of course gives you the opportunity to visit the Natural Park area of San Rossore, established in 1979. It covers approximately 24,000 hectares situated along the coast. Although it lies in the middle of a strongly urbanized area, this territory has maintained considerable natural features. You will find one of the rare examples of non-built coastal area, with marshes, lakes, dunes, and abundant wildlife.
