Martelli House Museum
Discover the 18th century patrician home of one of the major Florentine families – the Martelli. The palazzo is a fine example of a family home that functioned for centuries as the seat of the Martelli in Florence.
The Museum of Casa Martelli is unique in that it was organically created by a noble family through centuries, and is not the result of arbitrary restoration efforts. The exhibition includes a fine collection of paintings (works by Piero di Cosimo, Luca Giordano, Domenico Beccafumi and others), as well as frescoes, sculptures, and furniture dating back to the 17th through the 19th century.
The first Martelli arrived in Florence in the 14th century, and the family quickly rose to power and influence. Merchants, senators, military men, poets, landowners, politicians – the Martelli were influential in many fields. The Martelli\'s alliance with the Medici proved to be a further asset.
In 1738, Niccolò and Giuseppe Maria Martelli employed the architect Bernardo Ciurini to transform several houses into the present palace. Many of these had belonged to the family since the early 1500s. The interior of the “new” palazzo was decorated in the taste of the period with frescoes, as well as with paintings by Vincenzo Meucci, Bernardo Minozzi, and Niccolò Conestabile, with stucco ornamentation by Giovan Martino Portogalli.
The fine collection of art belonging to the family was arranged in a specially designed suite of rooms. With exception of the Corsini collection, it is the last example of an 18th century Florentine collection to have been preserved intact.
The paintings include works by Piero di Cosimo, Domenico di Pace Beccafumi, Salvator Rosa, Luca Giordano, and 17th century Dutch painting.
Francesca Martelli was the last member of the family. With her death in 1986, the palazzo passed to the Florentine church, who gave it to the Italian state in 1999. In 2009, the Soprintendenza opened the palazzo to the public as the Museo Casa Martelli.
