The ancient shops of Florence
Discover Florence's historical shops! This walking tour will take you to some of the landmark boutiques of Florence. Florence was the capital of Italy during the mid-1800s, a period when the city saw the birth of elegant cafes, markets, fashion boutiques, and beauty stores - some of them still in business today!
The program:
10:00am: Meeting point in front of the Cafe Giubbe Rosse, the historical café located in Piazza Repubblica. The guide will offer you coffee in this elegant antique setting.
The Cafe Giubbe Rosse was founded in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele (now Piazza della Repubblica) in the late 19th century after the demolition of the “old ghetto,” a stone's throw from the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. The famous Cafe has been called "the University of Giubbe Rosse", as this locale was one of the main venues of the literary and artistic history of the twentieth century. Today, aside from being one of the premier cafes and restaurants in town, the Giubbe Rosse continues its cultural tradition by hosting an uninterrupted series of book presentations, exhibitions of artistic works, as well as the the so-called 'Dinners for Art.' A fascinating history to discover!
10:30am: Walking towards the Vinaio (literally "wine vendor") Migliorini, one of the oldest "vinai," offering a large selection of wines and at least two hot dishes a day – all in his small, wood-decorated shop.
11.00am: Visit the central market place near San Lorenzo market.
12:00 noon: Stroll to Sbigoli's ceramic workshop and visit. A century ago, the sculptures and ceramic objects created here adorned the gardens and houses of the Tuscan nobility – experience this Florentine institution from the inside!
1:00pm: Special Tuscan lunch with wine at Ristorante & Vineria Gastone – enjoy your well-deserved break in this much praised locale.
2:30pm: Walking towards the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy. Brief visit of this antique place, which has carefully preserved its interior architectural style.
Dominican monks began concocting herbal remedies here in the 13th century – and production has continued almost uninterruptedly since those long-ago days!
4:15pm: Return back to Caffè Giubbe Rosse and end of the excursion.
