The Terraces of the Duomo in Milan
The Duomo in Milan, the monument which is considerd the symbol of the main town in the region, is the most important gothic architectural work in Italy. Build with white marble, the solemn construction of the building had a very long and tormented history which began at the end of the year 1300 and which led to the present realization of the building only in the first half of the XIX century for want of Napoleone Bonaparte. Located in the homonymous square next to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and surmounted by the famous Madonnina, the Duomo surely is the ideal place where to start visiting the city which attract every day thousands of visitors.
A very interesting peculiarity of the Duomo is represented by its terraces which, coverd with plate marble of Condoglia, expand over an area of 8000 mq, covering the majority of the surface of the Duomo. The central terrace is 1350 mq alone and it reproduces the central nave of the Cathedral on the outside. This is due to the effect created by the lateral pinnacles which function as vertical pole and, in the central point of the lantern, from the major pinnacle crowned by the Madonnina. The presence of the terraces is linked to the conception of the double vaults system, whose heavy cover would not be substained by the usual wooden carpentry.
Walking on the terraces of the Duomo is an incredible amusement, and this is what make it different from the other European gothic cathedrals for the influence of sensitivity and for the influence of the cultural tradition in Lombardia. The conditions of the terraces, the wide spaced and long passageways along the perimeter, offer the visitors an ever changing panorama looking the old town, reaching out the Alps and the plain of the region.
