Museum of the City of Narni in Palazzo Eroli
Visit the ancient Umbrian hill town of Narni and the city museum at Palazzo Eroli! Narni and its important museum are situated a little over an hour north by car from Rome, about two hours south of Florence. Narni is very close to the geographical center of Italy, marked by a stone. It is also said that C. S. Lewis discovered the name of Narni in an atlas, and used it as an inspiration to create his Narnia.
The Eroli Museum of Narni is one of the most important museums in the province of Terni. Named after the historian, archaeologist, and antiquarian native of Narni, and descendant of the Marquis of Narni Giovanni Eroli (1813-1904), the Museum houses significant works of art and a rich collection of archaeological artifacts.
The Museum is located in Palazzo Eroli and is split over three floors occupying an area of approximately 900 square meters. The ground floor of the building houses the town library with more than 17,000 volumes, most of which were printed between 1600 and 1800, as well as a precious collection of works by Dante with almost 1,800 pamphlets and books from the private collection of Giovanni Eroli.
On the first floor there are prehistoric artifacts, a section devoted to the Classical Age, as well as evidence of Narni's pre-classical and medieval past. Among the most unusual works exhibited is an Egyptian mummy with its sarcophagus, donated to the museum by the coin collector and adventurer Edoardo Martinori.
The second floor houses the gallery with at its center the “star exhibit” of the museum, the Coronation of the Virgin by Domenico Bigordi, known as Domenico Ghirlandaio. An entire room is dedicated to the splendid altarpiece. In addition, works by Benozzo Gozzoli, Piermatteo of Amelia, of Lo Spagna, Vecchietta, Antoniazzo Romano, and Livio Agresti are also exhibited.
You'll enjoy "CaffEroli," the museum cafe, for a cappuccino or snack after (or before) your visit. It's also the perfect place for reading and relaxing, as the spacious room is equipped with a bookshop, a reading section and a children's corner to allow visitors a quiet moment.
There is also a large reference library for adults (art, history, traditions), and one reserved for young visitors for a fun approach to art and history through educational and recreational activities. Guided tours around the historic center are available for booking at the museum's ticket desk. Complete you Eroli Museum experience on the spacious terrace overlooking the picturesque gorge of the Nera.
