Daily Hiking Excursions in Southeastern Sicily | Weekend in Italy
Choose from the four available itineraries! Guided nature hikes for 4 or 6 hours to discover the natural beauty and archaeological remains of Southeast Sicily:
Cave of Ispica (Ragusa)
This hike will help you discover the northern area of the Cave of Ispica, the most interesting and least known of this valley abundant with typical Mediterranean vegetation. The Cava d'Ispica contains many testimonials that attest to the presence of man from prehistoric times until the earthquake of 1693.
This loop trail leads, with amazing views, into one of the most uncontaminated places of the Hyblaean mountains. Fascinating archaeological sites such as the castle and the village of Pernamazzoni await you in the Sicán heart of the Valley. In a day you can enjoy excursions throughout the site, visiting other interesting rock sites such as the convent, la capreria and the “parco della forza” (park of power). The tour includes a stop at the Kalura refuge for coffee or tea accompanied by local sweets.
Noto antica and Carousel cave (Syracuse)
An excursion to discover the Archaeological Park of Alveria and one of its most picturesque valleys, the Valley of the Carousel in Noto. You’ll visit what remains of Noto antica, a medieval town built on Mount Alveria which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1693. Participants will be accompanied to the Cave of the Carousel with its typical Mediterranean vegetation. Within the gorge, the river Asinara creates some ponds. There, you can visit the tanneries of Arab origin and rock-cut caves used as chapels.
- Duration: half day or full day, according to request.
- Maximum incline: 150 metres (500 feet).
- Minimum equipment: hiking boots and backpack.
- Please bring your own packed lunch for full-day excursions.
Cava Grande del Cassibile Nature Reserve (Siracusa)
It is a natural reserve that spreads over the territory of Avola, Noto, and Siracusa. The reserve was created with the purpose of preserving the vast wealth of its territory both from the point of view of natural landscape and in terms of archaeology and anthropology, since the area has been inhabited for millennia and continues to harbour remarkable testimonies. The protected area includes a stretch of about 10 Km (6.2 miles) of the river Cassibile, which forms a canyon in the limestone typical of the Hyblaean mountains. The geomorphological and archaeological features, flora and fauna make this route particularly lovely and evocative.
- Duration: half day or full day, according to request.
- Maximum incline: 150 mt to 250 mt (500 - 800 feet), depending on path chosen.
- Minimum equipment: hiking boots, backpack.
- Please bring your own packed lunch for full-day excursions.
Necropolis of Pantalica and Anapo Valley (Syracuse)
The area has been a nature reserve for a few years, and includes a plateau surrounded by deep canyons. These were dug over millennia by two rivers: the Anapo and Calcinara. With its 5000 tombs carved into the limestone, Pantalica was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is Europe's largest archaeological necropolis - a site that offers views of breathtaking beauty and a unique natural aspect.
- Duration: half day or full day, according to request.
- Maximum incline: 150 mt to 250 mt (500 - 800 feet), depending on path chosen.
