Duomo (Collegiate Church)

The Collegiate Church or Duomo is an iconic monument of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany - a veritable temple of faith and art, the development of the church reflects the growth and evolution of the city. Originally a simple parish church built around the year 1000, it became Propositura (church responsible for other parishes in the surrounding area) in 1056, and consecrated in 1148 by Pope Eugene III as he returned to Rome along the Via Francigena. In 1239, works of enlargement and embellishment began in which the most famous artists took part, up to the entire 17th century. Girolamo Savonarola preached from the pulpit of this church. The interior of the basilica is entirely frescoed with stories of the New Testament, attributed to the school of Simone Martini, and stories of the Old Testament by Bartolo di Fredi.

On the counterfaçade, a large fresco with the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, from 1465, and two beautiful wooden statues by Jacopo della Quercia. Above, Taddeo di Bartolo's frescoes depicting the Universal Judgement, evidently inspired by Dante's Inferno.

In a transept chapel is placed the famous polychrome wooden crucifix from the 3rd century. In the right aisle, the famous chapel of Santa Fina (1468) with its precious frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio and the elegant altar by Benedetto da Maiano.

Museum of Sacred Art

Created in 1915, the museum was recently expanded and restructured. It houses works from the Collegiate Church and from convents and churches of the region -paintings, plates, psalm books, sculptures, terracottas, remnants of funerary monuments, bas-reliefs, fabrics and silverware. Notable are the 14th century wooden sculptures of the Annunciation Angel and of the Madonna (of which remains only the bust) and the magnificent illuminated psalm books of Niccolò di ser Sozzo and Lippo Vanni. The painting by Bartolo di Fredi depicting the Madonna of the Rose, the only surviving fragment of a triptych, is particularly dear to the people of San Gimignano.

Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa

The Palazzo Comunale - with in its interior the Sala di Dante decorated with important cycles of frescoes with a courteous and knightly theme, the Pinacoteca (Art Museum), with works from the the 13th to the 17th centuries - is located on the central Piazza del Duomo.

The two upper floors of the complex constitute the "historic" seat of the civic museums of San Gimignano.

The exhibition itinerary includes a visit to the town hall, decorated with famous fresco cycles.

The visit continues with the Pinacoteca (Art Museum), where you can follow the fundamental moments of San Gimignano artistic history, with works by Coppo di Marcovaldo, Azzo di Masetto, Rinaldo, Memmo di Filippuccio, Lippo Memmi, and Niccolò di ser Sozzo. Furthermore, works by Taddeo di Bartolo, Lorenzo di Niccolò, the "Maestro del 1419", Filippino Lippi, Benozzo Gozzoli, Benedetto da Maiano, to conclude with the great altarpiece by Pinturicchio, painted in 1511. Leaving the museum, the courtyard frescoed with the coats of arms of the Podestà reserve as the last surprise a fresco of Sodom (early 1500s) and the ancient, recently restored bell from 1328.

From the Palazzo Comunale you can access the Torre Grossa, the highest in the city, to enjoy a breathtaking view.

Archaeological Museum (in the Conservatory of Santa Chiara)

Located on the first floor of the Conservatory of Santa Chiara, the Museo Archeologico exhibits Etruscan, Roman and medieval artifacts.

The important collection, coming from the territory and the city, illustrates the history of San Gimignano, highlighting also the techniques used, in different periods, for the realization of ceramic and glass containers.

Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte

The Romanesque style church of San Lorenzo in Ponte was built in 1240. Its loggia was closed in 1561 to create an oratory. The name derives from the fact that it was originally near the drawbridge of the bishop's castle.

The church is very simple both on the outside and inside, and houses a cycle of frescoes with the stories of St. Benedict and, below, a great fresco with the glory of Christ, Madonna and 12 apostles painted by Francesco di Ser Cenni around the year 1413.

Spezieria di Santa Fina (in the Conservatory of Santa Chiara)

Exhibited on the first floor of the Conservatory of Santa Chiara, the collection of ceramic and glass containers from the ancient spezieria (pharmacy) of the hospital of Santa Fina, founded in 1253, is one of the most beautiful and interesting contexts of San Gimignano.

In addition to exhibiting one hundred ceramic and glass vases starting from the 1400s, the layout reproduces the ancient structure of the pharmacy in some cases, the ancient drugs, which were found inside the containers, are also on show.

Since 2008, the museum also houses a valuable collection of ceramics from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art "Raffaele de Grada" (in the Conservatory of Santa Chiara)

Reopened to the public since June 2002, the gallery is the result of a long tradition of artistic patronage of the city.

The current set-up includes the exhibition of only a part of the numerous works of art owned by the municipality of San Gimignano, including the paintings by Raffaele de Grada, to whom the gallery is dedicated. Works by Niccolò Cannicci, Renato Guttuso, Sergio Vacchi, Vinicio Berti, Carmelo Zaki, Luciano Bartolini, Marco Gasti are also exhibited. An entire room is dedicated to the cycle "The Danger" by Giannetto Fieschi.
