The history of Fucecchio is mainly linked to the Via Francigena (an ancient road and pilgrims path to Rome) – Fucecchio was a crossing point of the Arno river. A stretch of ancient pavement is still visible today in Galleno. The heart of Fucecchio is the Corsini complex, built on the ruins of the medieval castle, home to the Museum of Fucecchio, and Poggio Salamartano, religious center of the local community since the 11th century. One of Italy's most famous journalists and writers, Indro Montanelli, was born in Fucecchio. The Montanelli Bassi Foundation is dedicated to his work and memory, displaying significant documentation on the journalist as well as exact reconstructions of his studies in Rome and Milan.
Known since ancient times as a river port and inseparably linked to life on the Arno, Capraia e Limite has a centuries-old tradition of shipbuilding documented in Limite at the Exhibition Center of Shipbuilding and Boating, where you’ll see miniature models of boats, caulking and carpentry tools, as well as documents on the history of the Società Canottieri Limite. On the forested slopes of Montalbano, beyond the village of Capraia, you'll find the remains of the wall of Barco Reale, a vast area used as a hunting lodge by the Medici in the 16th and 17th centuries. The area boasts a good network of trails ideal for hikers and horseback excursions.
