The Terraces
The Terraces of the cathedral are one of the most fascinating places in Milan. From about 70m height, it is possible to take in the extraordinary panorama of the city surrounded by myriads of statues, spires, flying buttresses, and "falconature". Covered with marble slabs from Candoglia, the terraces are spread over an area of 8,000 square meters and accommodate about 1,800 statues from different periods and schools. The Terraces are a unique feature of the cathedral of Milan, and they are often the starting point for those wishing to explore the city and its history.
The Treasure
The Treasure of the cathedral is preserved in the basements. It is a collection of the most valuable objects and furnishings created for and offered to the cathedral for the worship and liturgical service over the centuries. Visitors can see in them not only their artistic value, but also how the works reflect Milan's theological, biblical, and devotional history.
The archaeological area under the sacristy of the cathedral, including the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti and the apse of Santa Tecla, is one of the key places regarding the history and identity of Milan. Religious center of the city since the age of Ambrose – who baptized Saint Augustine here – the site is a key element of the extraordinary cultural and spiritual heritage of Milan. The first baptistery in Christianity to have an immersion font and an octagonal construction. The octagon commemorates, together with the seven days of creation, the eighth day, that of eternity, but also the eight evangelical beatitudes. St. Ambrose, who is said to have started work on it in 387, may have been inspired by the octagonal imperial mausoleum of Maximian: catechumens, entering the baptistery, thus were supposed to have the sensation of entering a tomb so that the men that they had formerly been would die and, as St. Paul says, would rise again with a new life in the holy water. Inside, the baptistery had eight niches, alternately rectangular and semicircular, overlooking the sides of the large central font, which had three steps leading down into it. A series of porphyry columns supporting a marble entablature stood in front of the counterforts between these niches, on which a large dome with elaborate mosaic decorations was placed.
